Tony DiBacco
Tony DiBacco12U Girls Legend

Tony, an NCCP level 2 coach, is new to the Rapids.  Since 1984 and until his retirement in 2015 at Orillia District Collegiate, he has head coached all levels – midget, junior, and senior – for both girls and boys.

For the past 10 years, Tony has also been head coaching with the Orillia Suns’ 12U to 17U teams. He also led week-long summer day camps for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players as well as being an instructor for the Orillia Suns spring house league.  Tony coaches passionately, emphasizing development, fitness, and fun. As a player, he captained the A. N. Myer Marauders to an OFSAA berth in 1978 and played 1 year with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. He also played 1 year for the OVA’s Toronto Blues, winning the Ontario Junior Championship and finishing 5th at the National Championship in 1980. In addition, Tony is an indoor Provincial referee.

Marc Ferretti

Marc has over 25 years’ experience coaching volleyball and soccer. Prior to joining the Niagara Rapids he coached with Brock Volleyball Club (BVC) for 5 years. For the last 11 years with the Niagara Rapids VC he has predominantly coached at the highest U17/18 levels garnering many medals, championships, and high(er) provincial rankings along the way.

He has guided numerous athletes toward many individual and team successes like HPC, OVA provincial teams, as well as through their post-secondary recruiting process toward an NCAA, OUA, or OCAA scholarship and successful career. Marc has continued to be the head coach of the boys and girls volleyball teams at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School in St. Catharines where he is a teacher for the past 19 years. Also an NCCP Level 3 certified soccer coach he has had numerous successful coaching experiences within the competitive club system and Holy Cross Boys Varsity Soccer with championships at League, Southern Ontario, provincial, and OFSSA levels. In coaching he emphasizes “respect and effort are always a priority and you need to do more than just love playing or coaching the sport but have a passion for all aspects of the sport.”

Coach Don has been an avid volleyball supporter for over 15 year.  All of his children played and both his daughters are playing in University.

Don worked with the Brampton Spikes program before relocating to the Niagara Region last year.   Coach Don would like to continue giving back to this great sport and we are looking forward to having him on the Rapids Coaching Staff!!     Welcome to Niagara and to the Rapids!!

Natasha Spaling
Natasha Spaling14U Girls Legend

Natasha Spaling is a graduate of the Masters of Coaching program at the University of Alberta, and the Kinesiology program at the University of Waterloo. While at Waterloo, she competed for the Waterloo Warriors volleyball team for four seasons, including three years as a team captain.

Currently Natasha is the head coach for the Niagara Knights women’s volleyball program. Prior to joining the Knights she served for two seasons as an assistant coach for the University of Alberta Pandas volleyball program winning back-to-back USport silver medals. She is actively involved in youth indoor and beach volleyball programs in both Ontario and Alberta working with the KW Predators and Jr. Pandas volleyball clubs, as well as the Volleyball Canada Centre of Excellence programs. Natasha has also been on staff as an assistant coach with the 17U Team Ontario provincial program.

Janet has been a high school physical education teacher for 18 years.  She loves playing a variety of sports and being active with her students.  She has coached high school volleyball, basketball, tennis, and track, and field.

Last year she had a wonderful experience as the coach of the U13 Rapids White team and looks forward to coaching again this year.

Bill Goertz
Bill Goertz14U Girls Summit

Bill started coaching at a young age for a competitive men’s fastball league in Niagara. He then player coached competitive slo-pitch baseball until 2002. 

With the start of his family, he switched to coaching his daughters’ soccer teams for the next 13+ years within the St. Catharines Jets organization. Bill played volleyball for half of high school, and afterward, he played in the intramurals at Niagara College, a men’s volleyball league here in St. Cath out of Laura Secord High, and the Co-Ed league at the old Niagara District High School in NOTL. He is a passionate loving dad of 3 awesome girls and has enjoyed coaching them all these years. Bill wants to coach to give back to the community and to say thank you to all the mentors and coaches that have supported him over the years. He also knows the importance of being a team player, winning and losing, succeeding and failing, and to show that it is ok to stumble as long as you give your best foot forward.

Tim Konkle is entering another season with the Niagara Rapids as our new 14U Girls Rival Coach! Tim’s fun, positive, and true passion coaching style is on full display at all times. 

Tim is NCCP Level 1 Certified coach with a decade of experience coaching youth volleyball across the Niagara Region. He competes in top leagues (indoor + beach), and proudly watches his twin daughters compete in the OVA (also with Rapids!).

This is Scott Weir’s third year coaching with the Rapids. Over the last 2 seasons, the 14U and 15U teams have managed a steady upward climb, ending last season with a silver medal at Provincials! His coaching career started 24 years ago as a wrestling coach.

He then started coaching baseball, soccer, and finally Volleyball. Scott’s favorite part of coaching with the Rapids has been the relationships with the athletes, a discovering what makes them a better player and person.

Niagara Rapids are pleased to announce that Tommy Sloan will be joining the Rapids coaching staff as Head Coach of the Niagara Rapids 16U Legend Team. There has been an influx of amazing new coaching talent in the Niagara region! One of those is Tommy Sloan, who is the new Niagara College Men’s coach.

Coach Sloan comes from Alberta with a strong coaching resume. He was the Assistant Coach at Brandon University (2017/2018) and previous to that the Head Coach at Keyano College women’s program (2014-2017). Coach Sloan also has previous club experience, coaching with the Northern Lights Volleyball Club for 3 years. Beth Schulz, President of the Rapids, said, “It’s incredible to have such an experienced coach move into the Niagara region! His collegiate experience will raise the bar for our club girls. Tommy is an enthusiastic supporter of the club system, and recognizes the value of great training at this level. His willingness to get involved with the Rapids organization is amazing, and greatly appreciated! Coach Sloan brings not only a passion for the game, but a strong background and knowledge of the women’s game at a post-secondary level. Tommy has also accepted a second position with the rapids, and will function as the Technical Coach for all of the Rapids 16U teams. Welcome to the Rapids Coach Sloan!

Blair has played or coached in 13 national championships with 1 gold, and 3 bronze finishes, and has ranked in the top 5 nationally at university every year. Blair was an OCAA Western Region league All-Star, MVP, and led the Knights to their first appearance at a division one championship with an 11-3 record. 

  The following year he started as the Niagara Knights’ head coach. His time there included two seasons where the Knights only lost one match in Ontario, 3 OCAA Western titles, a championship Silver medal, and the three trips to the national championships. Blair was selected as OCAA Western Region Coach of the Year, and was inducted into the Niagara College Hall of fame (builder 2002), and the OCAA Hall of Fame in 2003 (coach).

Jay was actively involved in soccer and volleyball throughout High school which led to recreational volleyball in his 30’s.  When his kids became old enough, he helped coach them through the Rapids Spikes program. 

 This led to volunteering as a girls coach for both indoor and beach volleyball.  Last year he completed his Volleyball Coach Level 1 course and Soccer Coach Level 2 course. Jay is entering his 3rd year coaching girls travel volleyball and his 8th year coaching boys travel soccer. He loves that moment when the athletes catch a glimpse of their potential.  Though it may take weeks to get there, he believes that is the moment your focus and energy as a coach becomes contagious and their inner passion for the sports is born.

Jenn is a mom of three, and step-mom of two; all girls. She has loved volleyball most of her life and played throughout high school and for the University of Western Ontario (a very long time ago!). 

She continues to play on a local woman’s team and shares the passion with her partner, Dave, who will be helping out as the assistant coach. Her youngest girls started playing in the spikes program a few years ago and loved the game so much that they were part of a Rapids 14U team last year. Jenn has been an assistant coach for the Spikes program where she loved working with the kids and would like to continue to do so while being able to spend time with her children on the Courts. The Rapids have been a great program for her family to be part of and they are looking forward to being involved again this year.

Ken Millin 17U Girls Legend

Ken Millin is a grade 8 teacher at Prince Philip in St. Catharines. He is going into his 18th year of teaching, and throughout this time has coached numerous teams. These include basketball, track, badminton, rugby, and, of course, volleyball.

 He has been with the Rapids organization for 6 years, starting back in 2013 with the club’s first U12 team, and has stayed with this group of girls the entire way. Throughout that time they have achieved great success at both the provincial and national level, coming 3rd, 4th, and 5th in all 6 seasons in tier 1. Ken played volleyball throughout high school, and continues to play regularly once a week as his passion for the sport has not died. He is extremely excited to be back with the U16 Legend team this year and looks forward to working with Bill Hadfield as his partner. Go Rapids

Bill has over 30 years of experience coaching volleyball at the elementary, secondary, university, and club levels. After playing for Brock University, he started his coaching career at the high school level, coaching both boys and girls teams at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.

 He later returned to Brock to take over as head coach for the Men’s Varsity team where he held the position for 4 years.   Bill then established himself as an elementary school teacher and coach, and now serves as a principal with the District School Board of Niagara where he continues to support and promote the sport of volleyball. He returned to coaching high school at West Park Secondary School where his teams competed in several SOSSA and OFSAA championships. Most recently, Bill has coached the Rapids 13U, 14U, and 15U Girls, with teams finishing consistently in the top 5 at provincial and national championships.

This will be Lisa’s 3rd year coaching with the Rapids. She started with the 14U White team when her daughter decided she wanted to give volleyball a try! Her volleyball career has provided her with many opportunities, and countless wonderful memories of people and places over the years.

 She loves being able to pass on her volleyball passion and experience! Lisa has enjoyed being able to move from the player perspective to the coaching side of the game and give back to something that has had such a positive impact on her.

Steve comes to us with an impressive resume both as a University and College coach. His latest coaching position was with Mohawk College as Head Coach of the Men’s program for the 2017-18 season. He was previously an assistant coach for both the Brock University & Niagara College Women’s programs. Steve is a returning Rapids coach as he coached the Niagara Rapids 18 Boys program in 2013-14.

Steve had a very successful playing career where he won 3 OFSSA Gold medals and silver OCAA medal with Redeemer University College. He captained the Niagara College Knights to a Gold OCAA and Bronze OCAA medals, while also being named OCAA provincial MVP. Steve also won 2X OCAA West Region All-Star Awards, 2X OCAA Academic All-Canadian, as well as the all-time assist leader in the history of Niagara College men’s volleyball. Beth Shultz, President of Niagara Rapids Volleyball club, says, “We are excited to have Steve join the Niagara Rapids family. His charisma, enthusiasm, passion and volleyball knowledge is a combination that is hard to find. Steve comes in with experience at the OCAA level, both as a coach and a player. He will be a great fit for our elite 18U girls program as he is both personable and driven to succeed. I am delighted to have Steve return as a rapids coach and know that he will do amazing things!!”When  asked about his new coaching assignment with the Niagara Rapids, Steve had this to say, “I think this is a great opportunity to give back to the Rapids Community that gave me so much. I love what the Niagara Rapids stands for and I am excited to be a part of growing and developing young athletes to be exceptional people and volleyball players”.

Albino has coached for 33 years with mostly Eden High School, and 10 years with the Rapids. He has coached the Eden Senior boys’ Volleyball team to 9 OFSAA Gold medals, two silver, and one bronze. With the girls’ team, they won one OFSAA Gold medal, one silver, and two bronze medals. 

  At the OVA, he has taken five different 14U boys teams and won one provincial championship, two silvers, and two bronze medals in the Premier Division. He took two of these 14U teams to the Eastern Canadian Nationals Championship and came away with the gold medal. Albino has also coached a 17U boys team to an OVA Provincial Championship Silver Medal at Premier Division. What he loves about coaching is taking players and developing them into complete and confident players that can work well with their teammates. A few words that would describe him are hard-working, committed, and passionate about the game.

Bill has been coaching for 11 years (13U-18U boys and girls and Eden Sr. Boys and Girls) and played at the College Level (Summit Pacific and Tyndale back in the day when they had volleyball teams) and one summer of Semi-Pro. Reed (my oldest) played with Rapids until 17U.

 Tessa played at Redeemer. Garrett played at TWU. All three played at Eden and all three played for the Rapids His favourite moments include winning OFSSA with Eden (as an assistant coach; Traveling to tournaments; seeing players develop; and the “life chats” on the drive to tournaments; The reason I love to coach is because I had a coach that believed in me and it really changed the direction of my life. I simply want to pay it forward. I love seeing kids who struggle with confidence develop as they are placed in an environment that pushes them to be the best version of themselves. This goes far beyond the sport and into who they are as a person. Volleyball is a great environment for this to take place. There is no better way to  learn how to be a team player, deal with disappointment, be humble in victory, and accomplish a goal that you have set for yourself. This is why I coach!

NRA track and field coach who had a u16 girl silver medalist at Canadian nationals and another girl and boy medalist at OFSAA.

Rob Currie

Rob has been coaching several sports over the last 14 years as a teacher focusing primarily on basketball, track, and volleyball. He has been with the Rapids since 2006 working with various age groups. Rob believes in the acronym of H.A.R.D, where his athletes are taught that if they throw HEART, ATTITUDE, RESPECT, and DEDICATION into all they do, they will achieve success!

He has also completed his National Certification level II in basketball and is working towards the same level for Volleyball.

David is a St. Catharines native and is starting his first year as an assistant coach for the 14U Legends team. He played middle blocker for 7 years and is a former Niagara Rapids player of 5 years. 

He has coached previously at Camp Madawaska for 3 years, and last season he volunteered with the Niagara Rapids 15U Black team that won a Bronze medal at provincials and placed 5th at Nationals. David looks forward to working with a new team to develop their playing abilities, communication skills as a group, and helping each player reach their next step to success.

Tim is in his second year as a Head Coach with the Niagara Rapids volleyball club, where he previously assisted with the 16u Black team. As a committed community member, he participates yearly in a middle school volleyball tournament and coaches the same middle school teams to help them develop their skills.

  In his teens, he competed for Belle River High School and began his beach career in 2’s, where he traveled across Canada and the USA, competing in tournaments. Since then he has kept his physical game a priority and has been playing beach and indoor volleyball both in leagues and in money tournaments. Coaching Philosophy: Tim is always open to innovative and new ideas while combining past experiences to provide guidance to his athletes. In addition to developing their court skills, he hopes to enhance their leadership skills and work ethic to create well-rounded individuals on and off the court. He believes a positive attitude is everything!

After 5 years of post-secondary volleyball, Reggie has returned to his home club to begin his coaching career. Reggie has competed at every level of volleyball possible in Ontario, beginning in High School where he won a SOSSA Gold medal and made an appearance at OFSAA while also playing for the Rapids. Next Reggie took his skills to Trent University where he played for 4 years. Lastly, Reggie finished playing at Brock University in his senior year for the Badgers.

Jacob is entering his second year in the Sport Management program at Brock University. From Strathroy, ON, he spent his club career playing for London Volleyball Club and played four years of high school for Strathroy DCI, where he was given MVP in his grade 12 year. He is returning for his second year coaching Rapids while helping as an assistant coach for the Brock Men’s Volleyball Club; and this year as an assistant coach for the 17U Boys Legend.

Brady Allen (AC)

Brady has been involved with the sport at the primary grade level. He played three years at Governor Simcoe Secondary School, achieving a SOSSA AAA gold in Grade 12, and a top 10 finish at AAA OFSAA. 

 Since then he was the assistant coach at Governor Simcoe with the Senior Girls program for two years, winning back to back SOSSA AAA championships. Most recently he has taken on the Head Coach role at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School with the Junior Boys program, an assistant coach role with the Niagara Rapids, and an assistant coach role with the Brock University Varsity Woman’s Volleyball team.
